Experience
In any type of performance, physical talent shapes one’s potential, while mental skills determine how fully that potential is reached. Tom’s bowling courses have always included sessions on psychological skills employed by successful athletes. His college classes were popular with Conservatory of Music students, many of whom reported that the mental techniques being taught to aid their bowling were also improving their focus and confidence on the concert stage. As word spread around campus, Tom was invited to present a few guest lectures each semester in a Sport Psychology class, offering mental techniques to accompany the students’ study of theory. He has also presented campus-wide sessions titled “The Mental Game of Life” and “Imagine That: Psychological Skills for Leaders.” An Oberlin College football coach sought Tom out to discuss mental strategies to address some issues his quarterbacks were facing; after moving on to coach at Stanford University, the coach still occasionally visits Tom for mental game consultations. During Tom’s 14 years coaching youth and high school fastpitch softball players (which included an Ohio Girls Softball Organization state championship in 2008), he guided many young women in the areas of goal formulation, thought management, teamwork, imagery, rituals and routines. And he has led clinics to help Girl Scout troops earn their Good Sportsmanship merit badges.
Tom is adept at crafting individual or group mental game sessions tailored to any pursuit. Let him know the pinnacle you or your group would like to reach, and he will start building a road map to help you get there.
Testimonials
“When I started working with Tom Reid I was struggling to cash in regionals. Two years later I was bowling for a major title and became a national touring pro shortly after. Tom changed the way I bowl, the way I think and the way I approach life. He’s one of a very few coaches who understands all facets of the game. He works with your mind just as much as your body. Most importantly, Tom Reid is not just my coach, he’s also my friend. He cares about his students and his reach goes far beyond the lanes.”
“Through coaching with Tom, I learned to place more value on the mental aspects of the game of softball. I witnessed it pay off as our high school girls experienced more success, and have continued to incorporate much of his philosophy into the Oberlin High softball program. ”
“When I was in high school, I attended a basketball camp that focused on the mental game. It was inspiring, life changing. The following years I spent in sports and then the years I supported my kids through sports, I never came across another program that focused on the mental game. Until Tom Reid coached my daughter’s summer softball team. He dedicated one practice a week to the mental game, team building and so much more. Tom also ran a Good Sportsmanship badge for my Girl Scout troop that focused on teamwork and the psychology of the game. Tom Reid is an amazing person, coach and an inspiration to young minds!”
